Marc Johns: Artist, Comedian, Hero, etc.

I just stumbled across the “post-it” note artwork of the ingenious Marc Johns. I wanted to give a nice intro for Marc but I feel his words would do the job better than I ever could. Take it away Marc!

“Marc Johns creates whimsical drawings filled with dry wit and humour. Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He's been drawing since he was tiny. He's not tiny anymore, but he's not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he's talking about himself in the third person...

I generally aim to say as much as possible with as few elements as possible. My work often leans toward humour. Finding the humour in things often leads to finding the truth.

I like to create absurd situations, by combining things together that don’t belong, or imagine what inanimate objects would say if they could speak. For instance, the pen I am using to write this draft would probably say: "I'm tired. Can we stop for a bit?" Or perhaps it would say: "I can't believe you're making me write this. This is rubbish. Signing cheques would be more inspiring than this." These are the things I think about. I think about a lot of things. I think about thinking. Don't try it though, it's not worth it.

I use watercolours in ways you shouldn't. I make my own sketchbooks. If I smoked, I'd roll my own. I'd rather draw than rent a movie. Don't try to start a conversation with me about recent films. I haven't seen any. I play the guitar. If I was a hobo, I'd learn to play the ukulele, because you could fit one in your duffle bag. My artwork and the materials I use are quite compact. You could fit my studio in a large suitcase. I hope you like my drawings, or at least some of them.”

His humour makes me laugh out loud…literally (hence me spelling it out rather than writing lol). Here are a few pieces of his post-it note artwork that also made me giggle.

You can visit his website and even purchase some of Marc’s artwork (great last minute holiday gift idea!), including his watercolour artwork, here!

The wonderful art of Sofi Zezmer

A pen, a badminton shuttle, a key. All very common objects. They have no special meaning or so and they just do what they are made for. The key opens a door, the pen jots down a signature etc. At one point the key breaks and the pen gets empty and we throw them away. Too bad, because they can berecycled. You'll probably think "how can you recycle an empty pen?"
The Polish Sofi Zezmer can. Working in Germany she creates art that is composed out of common materials. Here are some of her sculptures.

Using the most ordinary objects such as bicycle horns, mirrors and badminton shuttles Zezmer creates the most colorful pieces of art. And the best part is that most of the stuff she processes into her sculptures has been used before and therefore is recycled!

Tom Sachs' NASA Video!!!!!!!

Good Morning!

Firstly, yes this post deserves seven exclamation points!
This is so exciting!

Who is Tom Sachs? What does he have to do with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration?

Tom Sachs is a New York artist who combines parody, genuine adoration, and a D.I.Y. ethic into his art, which consists primarily of sculptures and videos. He has zero to do with NASA.

Looky here! It's all mostly foamcore!

The wonderful thing about Tom Sachs' work is that while non-functioning, (i.e. you ain't going to the moon in the Lunar Lander,) the pieces are extraordinarily functional. By that we mean: if you were one of the lucky folks who went to the show at Gagosian in L.A. you were encouraged to climb the ladder into the lander and there hang out, warm yourself with strong drink, listen to music, and play a custom rigged Playstation. Even the Lander's toilet worked. Mr. Sachs and his team built everything from scratch. The spacesuits, the lander, Mission Control... everything.

We here at SuperForest are incredibly inspired and awed by Mr. Sachs, so it was a special surprise to hear (from SuperForester Andrew) that he'd gone and put the video he made for his last exhibition up on youtube!

So, without further ado, we proudly present Tom Sachs: A Film About the Space Program.
(We must warn you, there is Blue Language involved, so talk to your kids about the proper time and place for profanity if you let them see this. But by all means, let them see this.)

A Film About the Space Program - 2008
(In two parts)

Ahhhhhhh. Safe back on Earth.

Happy Monday,

Team SF

Special thanks to keen eyed SuperForester Andrew for alerting us to this.
