First heard about him via swissmiss.
Swissmiss means bizzniss.

Project 10^100: May Those Who Help the Most Win.

So, I don't know how many of you actually look around the Google website instead of just using its search engine wondrousness... but I love this company and I like to read their blog and learn about their awesome new projects.

And I found one today that people can get involved in. Its called Project Ten to the One Hundredth.

The gist of it is you submit an idea you have that can help a bunch of people all over the world, and whichever idea helps the most people wins. Pretty cool eh? Imagine! You have an idea, and Google helps you make it happen! Gosh what a trip!

So Google explains it like this:

"Why this project?
Never in history have so many people had so much information, so many tools at their disposal, so many ways of making good ideas come to life. Yet at the same time, so many people, of all walks of life, could use so much help, in both little ways and big.

In the midst of this, new studies are reinforcing the simple wisdom that beyond a certain very basic level of material wealth, the only thing that increases individual happiness over time is helping other people."

"How it works
Project 10100 (pronounced "Project 10 to the 100th") is a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible. Here's how to join in.

1. Send us your idea by October 20th.
Simply fill out the submission form giving us the gist of your idea. You can supplement your proposal with a 30-second video.

2. Voting on ideas begins on January 27th.
We'll post a selection of one hundred ideas and ask you, the public, to choose twenty semi-finalists. Then an advisory board will select up to five final ideas. Send me a reminder to vote.

3. We'll help bring these ideas to life.
We're committing $10 million to implement these projects, and our goal is to help as many people as possible. So remember, money may provide a jumpstart, but the idea is the thing."


So... feeling inspired? Got an idea? Tell Google. They rock so darn hard. Deadline is October 20th. So put your thinkin cap on.

New Museum NYC

Cripes!

Have I been asleep, in a cave, with my head under a rock?

How did I not notice this?! How did I not notice this ravishing, thrillingly wonderful building? And the fact that this incredible building is an art museum?!

I'm slipping.

This is the New Museum on Bowery. Easily one of the tastiest buildings in Manhattan.

"On December 1, 2007, the New Museum opens its first freestanding, dedicated building. Conceived as a sculptural stack of rectilinear boxes dynamically shifted off-axis around a central steel core, this innovative structure has a variety of open, fluid, and light-filled spaces, with skylights created by the setbacks between floors. The exterior is clad in a seamless, anodized aluminum mesh, which emphasizes the volumes of the boxes while dressing the whole building in a delicate, softly shimmering skin. The elegantly rough structure suits both the New Museum’s character as well as its neighborhood. The edifice appears as a shimmering beacon, visually mutable and dynamic, animated by the changing light of the day—a perfect metaphor for the ever-changing nature of contemporary art. Inaugural exhibitions include “Unmonumental,” an international group show in four parts, as well as exhibitions and special projects by YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES, Ugo Rondinone, Jeffrey Inaba, and Sharon Hayes."

You'll notice in the first picture the rainbow neon sign on the front?
This building screams "Hell Yes!", and I wanna scream "Hell Yes!" right back.

iBand

A very interesting demonstration of how wonderfully flexible the iPhone is.

I call mine the "content machine."
It allows me to constantly document and create.

I've even got a little song I sing, to the tune of the Spiderman theme song from the old cartoon:

"Content machine! Content machine!
It's the best toy that's ever been!
I can make.. videos, everywhere that I goes!
Look out! Here comes the content machine!"

SFNYC Assignment 2: Update

Good Morning All,

Alright, here is me turning in Assignment 2.

This is an image I created called "War and Peace."

I made it by taking two pictures:




Then, in Photoshop, I combined them and traced over them.
That's right, I straight up traced.
Do whatever you got to to make your dreams come true, baby.

I was really inspired by the forms of the two hands, and I let them take me on a little journey.









And all of those led up to this:

Hot Water Powered Solar Water Pump

Very exciting! Especially for places where sunlight is abundant and water is scarce. Places like, uhhh, most of earth's surface.

It pumps water on the upstroke, and generates power on the downstroke.

I think Parliament Funkadelic sang something about this years ago...

Best Video Ever?

It's got all the criteria for a great video: A narrator, rainbows, hopeful lyrics, slammin' bass licks, bells, magic glitter, and the dance stylings of a young M.J.

CENYC (Just Say: See Nice!)

I just found out about the Council on the Environment of NYC, (let's call them "See Nice!")

from their site:

They've also got a really well designed site up. All on one page you can find information on Recycling, Environmental Education, Community Gardening, Farmers Markets; vital info for all Five Burroughs.

And the best thing: a sweet Greenmarket Map you can download!

Corn Plastic Fantastic!

As a species, we are so smart.
When we realize that something is bad for our environment, we invent things to replace them.

Case is point, most cities are banning plastic bags, let's go one further, let's ban all non-recyclable plastic!

UK Smartness 2

This is a row of recycling bins in London.

As you can see, there are many of them, clearly labeled, for all kinds of materials.

I didn't ask these people to pose or anything, they were actually actively recycling.

Humans want to do better, they just need to be given the means.

I would love to see bins like these on every other street in NYC. (Plus one more for dog waste, which shouldn't go in the trash anyways, it should be composted.)

Today I am getting my computer set up, trying to figure out how exactly my "work flow" is going to operate, and dusting.
