Hope for the hopeless

I’ve been mulling over this for a few hours now as I wasn’t sure which way to put it. This weekend just passed, a few things happened that saddened me, angered me and, momentarily, lessened my positivity and hope regarding humanity.

Firstly, while riding on a bus headed into town, someone hurled a rock at a window towards the rear of the bus. It sounded like a bullet, the driver hesitated and, naturally, I felt quite scared and upset that someone would do that. Had we been travelling on an older-style bus (with regular glass windows), the rock no doubt would have launched right through the window and hit the passenger sitting beside it.

Secondly, following the rock incident, the driver stopped the bus and called the police to report the incident. The police told him that the passengers had to disembark and wait for the next bus while the police were on their way to investigate. A group sitting towards the back of the bus whined and harassed the driver as they were going to be late for whatever event they were headed to.

Thirdly, on another occasion, a schoolgirl made a racist slur under her breath that, had they heard it, would have offended just about half, if not all, the people on the bus.

Finally, while standing at the side of a road last night, waiting to cross, I turned to see a car suddenly swerve towards, then away from, me – if for no other reason than to scare the crap out of me. Following this incident, I got home and felt really down. I felt that people have no regard for each other and I started to harbour very negative thoughts. I felt helpless and sad for those who seek ways to torment others.

My boyfriend then said something that helped. “Ok, even if you tracked that kid’s car down and threw a tonne of bricks into his windscreen, his Dad would find the car in the morning and be very upset. He’d probably give someone else a hard time because he’d be so outraged. And the person he takes it out on might go and do the same to someone else. So the end result would be more unhappy people.”

This inspired a brainwave. If I woke up tomorrow morning, and was the nicest I have ever been, smiled at everyone I crossed paths with and just generally became, for lack of a more articulate expression, a beacon of light … that might set off a chain of goodness that stretches further than I could imagine. And then I thought of SuperForest. And how this is exactly what Jackson had in mind when he created it. To turn negatives into positives. Mission accomplished, dear friend.

A beautiful day

So, America made history today. Though half way across the world, my workmates and I huddled in our boss' office to watch the anticipated verdict on a tiny TV. I looked on as the Americans cheered, beamed, cried and were in every way overwhelmed by the result... "Senator Barack Obama elected 44th President of the United States". I sat in that office, ever so still, thinking of the significance of that very moment, and how I'll store it in my heart and mind as the day we made ourselves heard.

As I strolled back to my desk I noticed something I hadn't before. Something that, looking back, was pretty hard to miss – a giant 'O' perched directly behind me. I couldn't resist.

High-five America, you are BEAUTIFUL.

What a Wonderful World

Greetings friends and family,

Today I found myself filled with a strange emotion. It started out as mild excitement and built slowly, until I found myself brimming with optimism. That feeling? It's Hope.

"Hope is a belief in a positive out come related to events and circumstances in one's life."

"Hope is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best."

"To hope is to wish for something with the expectation of the wish being fulfilled."

No one can deny the importance of tomorrow's outcome. I for one am filled with extreme hopefulness.

And it is not because of who will or will not be elected.

I am filled with hope because of the country we live in.

Tomorrow we celebrate our democratic freedom. A freedom that allows us, despite our individual beliefs and differences, to come together as a nation. A freedom that makes everyone real equals, even if it is for only one day every four years.

Tomorrow, Joe the plumber's vote will count the same as Bill Gates'.
Tomorrow, my vote will be weighed equally with Michael Moores'.
Tomorrow, you and George W. Bush will have equal say in determining our next president.

And that is why I am hopeful. Sure our country has it's problems. But all-in-all, it is a pretty flippin' sweet place to live.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World
performed by Israel "Iz" Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole:

"I hear babies cry and
I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than
I'll ever know
And I think to myself,
'What a Wonderful World'."

Love and Hope to all,

Spoon

Songs in the Key of O

Barack Obama is one inspiring cat, and few can deny it. This is clearly shown by the incredible variety of songs and videos that have been created by average folks and posted online.

Let's see how many we can find!

Mighty Sparrow: Barack the Magnificent

Awesome!

Iowans: The Barack Song

Obama Boyz: Party Like Barack

Manicwithmark: Baby Got Barack

Afleishman: Barack Obama Song (Something About the Man)

RepresentinObama: New Obama Song (Representin' Obama)

Rockabelles: We Got the Mo

F0rtysxity: Fired Up! Ready to Go!

PaulAldrichComedy: I Just Heard a Man Named Obama

Kaufer2008: You Rock, Barack!

LoopDeville: Barack Obama Song (Stem the Rising Tide)

Tony & Kids: Yes We Can

BergevinBrothers: Fired Up, Ready To Go!

There are so many more! To post them all would take all day.

We've never seen anything like this before. Whatever this man is saying, it cuts clear across all previous assumptions of race, class, and education.

Truth and hope are intoxicating. And apparently very inspiring.

G'Obama!

Love to all,

Water, water, everywhere...

The headlines say it all:
"Study: Climate change will sap NM water supply!"
"No truce in tri-state water war!"
"Ramona residents back home – without water!"
"'No water = no Beer'!"

When futurists talk about the change to a Hydrogen economy, I'm not sure this is what they had in mind.
Remember the movie "Ice Pirates"? Basically it was about the future, when water is so precious that people happily fight and kill for it. Well, that time is here.

Here are three simple ways to reduce your water usage and save some of that sweet di-hydrogen monoxide for making ice.

1.) The Aqus!
From Watersaver Technologies: This marvy little device sits under your sink and collects the water when you're brushing your teeth, then it filters it and sends it over to your toilet tank to help flush the nasties away. Smart.

But, your commode wouldn't need water if you had one of these sweet babies!

2.) The BioLet 60 XL!
From BioLet. It's an odorless, waterless, composting toilet. Everytime you flush, 1.6 GALLONS of fresh water enter our sewer system. That's more than your average African gets to drink in a day. Every. Single. Flush.
Not with the BioLet 60 XL!

And finally, if water is scarce, just make your own!

3.) Rainwater Catchment Systems!
From various suppliers. Unfortunately, few companies (that I could find) in the U.S. are providing complete systems for capturing, filtering and utilizing rainwater. But the D.I.Y. spirit is as American as apple pie! And many places supply the individual pieces one would need to set something up.
The idea is simple: lots of clean water falls from the sky every year. Your house could store it for you to use at your leisure. Water for showers, the garden, pets and popsicles!

There are answers to every problem out there, if we work together and use our collective smarts.
