Bacteria To Give Us Fuel for the Future

Hey all! Jaell here.

I haven't posted in awhile do to a hiatus to my hometown in Wisconsin. I'm back in action, though, and ready to share something I read over at LiveScience.com.

As I'm sure you all are aware, Hydrogen is a very abundant and clean energy source that we'd all love to use daily if there was a way for us to get it efficiently. Currently, however, the processes are too expensive and inefficient for our economy to handle. Fuel-cell vehicles are starting to be commercially available, but are still not as prominent as we'd like.

A new way of acquiring hydrogen gas for fuel is through the use of tiny organisms that expel it during their daily natural processes.

"The production of hydrogen by microorganisms is intimately linked to their cellular processes, which must be understood to optimize bioenergy yields," said Amy VanFossen of North Carolina State University.

Of particular interest are microbes that thrive in hot temperatures, near the boiling point of water. VanFossen and her colleagues carried out a detailed DNA study of one of these thermophilic (heat-loving) bacteria called Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus, which was first found in a hot spring in New Zealand. The results, presented last week at the American Chemical Society meeting in Philadelphia, indicate which genes allow C. saccharolyticus to eat plant material, referred to as biomass, and expel hydrogen in the process. "

Just imagine... something as small as this little guy could change our whole world and future.

Sure makes me think that maybe one person can make a difference. Heck. One bacteria growing on a person could make a difference.

1978 Hydrogen Car (with Jack Nicholson at the Wheel!)

Just saw this over at treehugger.

Wow.

Thirty years ago they were talking about using solar cells to make hydrogen to power automobiles.

What we wonder is: What stopped that conversation?

No matter, for the idea has been revitalized and now stands at the precipice of, dare we say it? Widespread acceptance?

We love that Nicholson does the whole "breathing in the exhaust" bit. Good ol' non-toxic water vapor. Seriously, that's a smart bit of branding that's still every bit as effective now as it was then.

Water, water, everywhere...

The headlines say it all:
"Study: Climate change will sap NM water supply!"
"No truce in tri-state water war!"
"Ramona residents back home – without water!"
"'No water = no Beer'!"

When futurists talk about the change to a Hydrogen economy, I'm not sure this is what they had in mind.
Remember the movie "Ice Pirates"? Basically it was about the future, when water is so precious that people happily fight and kill for it. Well, that time is here.

Here are three simple ways to reduce your water usage and save some of that sweet di-hydrogen monoxide for making ice.

1.) The Aqus!
From Watersaver Technologies: This marvy little device sits under your sink and collects the water when you're brushing your teeth, then it filters it and sends it over to your toilet tank to help flush the nasties away. Smart.

But, your commode wouldn't need water if you had one of these sweet babies!

2.) The BioLet 60 XL!
From BioLet. It's an odorless, waterless, composting toilet. Everytime you flush, 1.6 GALLONS of fresh water enter our sewer system. That's more than your average African gets to drink in a day. Every. Single. Flush.

And finally, if water is scarce, just make your own!

3.) Rainwater Catchment Systems!
From various suppliers. Unfortunately, few companies (that I could find) in the U.S. are providing complete systems for capturing, filtering and utilizing rainwater. But the D.I.Y. spirit is as American as apple pie! And many places supply the individual pieces one would need to set something up.
The idea is simple: lots of clean water falls from the sky every year. Your house could store it for you to use at your leisure. Water for showers, the garden, pets and popsicles!

There are answers to every problem out there, if we work together and use our collective smarts.

Hooray!!!
