What a Wonderful World

Greetings friends and family,

Today I found myself filled with a strange emotion. It started out as mild excitement and built slowly, until I found myself brimming with optimism. That feeling? It's Hope.

"Hope is a belief in a positive out come related to events and circumstances in one's life."

"Hope is the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best."

"To hope is to wish for something with the expectation of the wish being fulfilled."

No one can deny the importance of tomorrow's outcome. I for one am filled with extreme hopefulness.

And it is not because of who will or will not be elected.

I am filled with hope because of the country we live in.

Tomorrow we celebrate our democratic freedom. A freedom that allows us, despite our individual beliefs and differences, to come together as a nation. A freedom that makes everyone real equals, even if it is for only one day every four years.

Tomorrow, Joe the plumber's vote will count the same as Bill Gates'.
Tomorrow, my vote will be weighed equally with Michael Moores'.
Tomorrow, you and George W. Bush will have equal say in determining our next president.

And that is why I am hopeful. Sure our country has it's problems. But all-in-all, it is a pretty flippin' sweet place to live.

Consume vs. Create

Good Morning SuperForest!

Lately, I've been feeling a bit down, and I realized something about myself:

My Consume/Create ratio was way off!

Because I care so much about the election, I've found myself spending hours online, reading the tea leaves, looking for any indication of which way the wind was blowing.

It all fun and games until you find yourself hitting refresh on Huffpo for the tenth time at 2 in the morning.

I realized that I have been creating less and simply consuming information, as much as I could get. No good.

I've decided to unplug. Get some writing and drawing done. Whoever gets elected will be president, and I'm cool with that.

If you are worried, anxious, nervous, agitated, worked-up, stressed...
Take a step back and see what you're consuming, then see if you can't ease the anxiety by making something with your hands.

If your Consume/Create ratio is off, simply adjust it until you feel positive again.

It's working for me, so far...

Until Tuesday.

Street Conversation

This is a little chunk of concrete on 19th St. between 7th and 8th Avenue.

I pass this little cement rectangle every day during my walks to and from work, and so I've been able to follow an interesting conversation as it progresses.

First, an Obama supporter carved the words "God Bless President Obama!" into the still-wet cement. This was up for a week or two before a McCain supporter sprayed the red "McCain" over the word Obama.

Finally, someone came by and put a sticker on the fire hydrant that reads: "Abort the Republicans."

Amazing. In New York, even the sidewalks have opinions and arguments.

We say: Better a hundred thousand arguments than a single fist fight.

God, I love this town. Blessings to both candidates, to free speech, and to the incredible city of New York.

Arianna Huffington - "The Internet and the Death of Rovian Politics"

Over at huffpo, Arianna herself has just posted a timely and well thought out article on why the internet has sounded the death knell for Karl Rove-style mudslinging.

Why? Because facts are too easily searchable now, and mud don't quite stick the way it used to.

Some choice cuts:

"Thanks to YouTube -- and blogging and instant fact-checking and viral emails -- it is getting harder and harder to get away with repeating brazen lies without paying a price, or to run under-the-radar smear campaigns without being exposed."

"... There is a diamond amidst all this dung: the lack of traction this Rovian politics is getting. It's as if Rove and his political arsonists keep lighting fires, only to see them doused by the powerful information spray the Internet has made possible."

Mmmmm. So tasty. In "Here Comes Everybody," Clay Shirky writes about how the societal effects of a new technology aren't really felt until ten years after the tech has become ubiquitous. Well, the internet has by no means reached a point of ubiquity and already we are seeing old systems and behaviors crumble.

So two questions: When will the internet reach "ubiquitousness"?
And, what else will disappear as it become ubiquitous?

We've seen the massive weakening of traditional media distribution, the rise of Pro-Amateurs in every major field, and now what could very well be a new age of transparency and accountability.

Politicians and citizens alike having to be careful when they tell lies and sling mud because everything they've said and done publicly is readily searchable? Whoah....

I'm all for it. If what you say and do are in sync, you've got nothing to worry about.

Last week I went to an Obama/Biden rally in Long Island. It was great. People of all walks of life getting together in the name of growth and positivity plus some fine music equals a very engaging rally.

My brother Will and I were walking around, checking out the crowd, and we came across this guy:

The one, the only... Dan Wagner. Wedding photographer, dolphin-ride enthusiast, patriot.



Dan's new work, the Obama Project, involves him bringing these giant plastic letters with him everywhere he goes, photographing people holding them.

The Great Schlep!

Comedienne extraordinaire Sarah Silverman has just released this incredibly hilarious and profane video for The Great Schlep.

The Great Schlep is a movement aimed at getting young Jewish kids to fly down to Florida, visit with Grammy and Grampa, educate them on the necessity of an Obama presidency, and get them to cast their vote for the man.

(Yo, this is Sarah Silverman. I'm serious when I say it gets profane. That said, this is lovely, uplifting, and hilarious.)

Vote Ecologically

With the US Presidential Elections in just a few weeks and the battle for votes about to begin there is possibly no better time to address the environment as a serious point on the political agenda.

But with the United States of America being in a Wall Street nightmare the focus tends to shift from the environment to stock, banks and the global economy.

Well, luckily enough for the green-minded garment company Under The Canopy designed an awe-some t-shirt telling you what to vote on November 4th.
