
The CS Monitor has a nice piece about a Brooklyn woman who stopped her brownstone from flooding by installing a "green roof." This means that instead of shingles or tarpaper, she's now got a rooftop garden that absorbs rainwater and excess heat, and looks and feels great underfoot.

When I was growing up, a house down the street from mine had a grass covered roof. We used to go out on weekends to watch the owner try and mow it. Funny!
