Adios Blogger! (We've moved to WordPress)
Wow Blogger!
We've been together quite a while...
This is the one thousand four hundred and sixty fourth post we've written on you.
Alas, we must move on.
It has been an extraordinary ride.
Thank you, Blogger.
You have been a noble host, and an excellent template.
Bravo Blogger.
Lots of love,
Team SuperForest
P.S. Here are the first two SuperForest posts.
Day One (Give or Take)
Happy Happy Happy!
(SuperForest is now found exclusively at SuperForest.org)
A Moving Day for SuperForest!
Good Morning SuperForest!
As the morning progresses you might notice that SuperForest looks a bit different today.
That's because we are now hosting our own site on our own server space!
AND we've redesigned things to make searching for your favorite SuperForest posts easy! Want to read all of the posts by a single SuperForester? Just click their name.
Yay!
So we must say a fond "Aloha" to Blogger, which has worked so beautifully for us, as we say "Hello" to Wordpress.
In addition to the increased ease of use, hosting our own site also allows us to grow in some exciting new ways. Now, we can have our own wiki, our own chat rooms, our own social networking site.
In short SuperForest is shaping up. If you like your content elevating, your discussions thought provoking, and your DIY info so tantalizingly informative, well, you know where to go...
SuperForest.org!
We sincerely hope you enjoy the redesign and the increased usability.
Love to All,
Team SuperForest

The Selk'Bag and Daft Punk
But what is the Selk'Bag actually? It's a sleepbag-suit or: a sleepbag that has to be worn.
It's yellow, it keeps you warm in cold nights but it also looks terribly goofy. This last reason clearly wasn't an argument for British outdoor firm Lippi, they have a Selk'Bag product line. The different types of bags are for sale online. Now, the name Rodrigo Alonso may sound familiar to you. That's because SuperForster Niki briefly mentioned one of his works in a post about trash and recycling. (The lamp at the bottom is Alonso's).
But what's got a sleepbag-suit got to do with Daft Punk you may be asking yourself.
A while ago a youtube user created a video, named Daft Hands. It was a direct hit and many alike vids followed. But that's old news. What isn't old (youtube) news is Daft Body. In short it's two dudes wearing a Selk'Bag performing a robot-dance on Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk.
Here it is.
Hereby I officially promote the Selk'Bag to multi-purpose. Because it keeps you warm in cold nights, allows you to do the funniest dances and gives you the best costume for Halloween!

The Black Seeds
I proudly present to you, Black Caraway Seeds (or as we simply call them in my family…black seeds).

The seeds appear pretty normal but the reality behind their meager appearance is that they are actually very powerful. To commence our Black Seed Informative Tour we are going to go back in time. Here are a few facts...
1.Black seeds were discovered in Tutankhamen's tomb. This implies that it may have played an important role in ancient Egyptian practices or at the very least, was important enough for them to take with them to the afterlife.
2. Dioscoredes, a Greek physician of the 1st century, recorded that black seeds were taken to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache, and intestinal worms.
3. The many uses of black seed has earned for this medicinal herb the Arabic approbation habbatul barakah, meaning "the seed of blessing."
So history is trying to tell us that these little guys were important and that they can be used to treat wide variety of ailments. How amazing! Nature is so kind to provide us with such incredible gifts. A lot of scientific studies have been conducted and also validate the awesome power of the black caraway seed. Studies show that the black seeds help strengthen the immune system, inhibits histamine release, contains anti-tumor properties, fights bacteria, and works as an anti-inflammatory. Now I know what you’re thinking;this sounds too good to be true, does it work? I can only respond to this by saying I cannot remember the last time I had a cold (knock on wood).

So here comes the family secret: next time you are feeling a little under the weather, try this.
1. Go to your local market and buy a bag of these black seeds, if you know of a Mediterranean foods store try them, there is a much higher chance they carry these seeds.
2. Take a pinch of these seeds, just a pinch is all you will be eating (trust me, the seeds pack quite a punch, you won’t want to eat too much)
3. Place the seeds in your mouth and chew the seeds up really well. (This is the part where things get to get a little gross, you see, black caraway seeds are notoriously bitter. They don’t taste really good but hey, neither does medicine. You wanna get better don’t you?)
4. Swallow (probably the hardest part but trust me, it will all be worth it)
That’s it! Easy as that, take it a couple times a day and you’ll start to feel better straight away. The one thing that is important to keep in mind is that you must take the seeds right when you start to feel you’re coming down with something, if you take it when you are in the thick of symptoms, well, you might be a little too late.
And there you have it; a potential cure for the common cold. You read it here on SuperForest. In celebration, here is a lovely jam by a little band from New Zealand called…The Black Seeds (surely these lads knew the power of the black seeds when choosing their band name).
SuperForest wishes you all a very healthy 2009! Go on with your bad selves.

Alex Steffen and WorldChanging.com
I just got done watching a mind-blowing TED talk by Alex Steffen about mankind's transition to sustainability. It's very, very hopeful.
To distill: The Earth is too small and there are too many folks for us all to live as we currently do.
The solutions are many faceted, but boil down to two things: Bright Green Cities- We in the developed nations must work to make our cities as efficient, people-dense, and easy to get around as possible. Invest in infrastructure, low energy buildings, green roofs and a "sharing economy."
AND we must help the billions around the world leapfrog all old technologies and modernize with cheap and robust tech as quickly as possible. Set up community centers to teach computer literacy and programming.
Efficient at home and efficient abroad, everyone sharing and playing nicely together.
He spells it out well, I think.
It turns out that Mr. Steffen runs a site called WorldChanging.com which is like SuperForest's big, serious, older brother. You've got to see it.
Says Alex Steffen about his site: "(It's) a news service for the unimaginable future."
And yet, everything he proposes is very imaginable. What is totally unimaginable is the sort of societal transformation that would occur were everyone's basic necessities provided for using technology.
With everyone interconnected via the net, who can foretell the amazing hybrids and trends to come. As
We shall check in often with WorldChanging. And keeps our looky-balls peeled for Mr Steffen.
Upcoming Deliciousness!
Good Morning SuperForest!
We've got a lot of fun things coming up in the week to come:
SuperForester Jackson is heading down the Washington D.C. to cover the inauguration of someone named Barrock Owbamma (or something like that..)
The SuperForest blog is going to be moving from blogger to wordpress. (More on that later...)
SuperForester Jordan will be finishing up his series of posts from this years Consumer Electronics Show. (Here are parts one and two.)
New SuperForest Comics! (Here are some older ones: Cell Phones, Youtuber, Hare Removal, Ticklish.)
Thrilling new tales of sustainable adventuring!
Save-A-Seed growth and wonderful developments! 30 blogs and counting!...
So, if you like your content elevating, your discussions tantalizing, and your DIY extra informative, read SuperForest every day.
Better yet, set SuperForest as your homepage!
Have an excellent day.
Yay!

Goodbye to Andrew Wyeth

"Always believe in yourself, and believe in love."
-Andrew Wyeth
The world has lost an incredible painter and a gentle and loving soul.
Andrew Wyeth passed away on Friday. He died while he was sleeping in his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He was 91 years old.
MSNBC has a nice little web-only video on Wyeth and his work:
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
So far as we can tell, Andrew Zuckerman conducted the last interview and took the last portrait of Andrew Wyeth for his Wisdom Book. A remarkable man interviewing a remarkable man.
And here is Mr. Wyeth's obituary from the Times: "Andrew Wyeth, Painter, Dies at 91"
Bravo and aloha, Mr. Wyeth.
DIY: How to Smile
Iman here with another amazing short film to share with you all. I am proud to present you with: VALIDATION.
So you, yes you, although I may not know you personally, although I cannot look you in the eyes and tell you this: YOU are GREAT! YOU are AMAZING! You can change the world...even with a smile.
So show off that beautiful smile and help others do the same. Print out this simple reminder and pass it on:
Standard Solar on Extreme Makeover
Good Morning SuperForest!
We just got an email from our friends at Standard Solar. We met the Standard Solar crew last year, in Washington D.C. for the congratulatory rally for the D.O.E.
As it turns out, Standard Solar has been tapped to install a solar array on some lucky ducks house in the Sunday PM showing of Extreme Makeover.
Here's a great little photo gallery of some of the projects that Standard Solar has carried out recently:
Find more photos like this on PickensPlan
And a fun little film:
Nice!
Here's their press release:
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition This Sunday
Tune into your ABC affiliate this Sunday night, January 18, at 8pm EST and you should see one of the first-ever green dimensions of a home built by Ty Pennington and his crew on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. On extremely short notice back in November, Extreme Makeover selected Standard Solar to design and install a pole-mounted, 2.76 kilowatt array of solar panels for the rebuilt Drumm family home in Quincy Township, Pennsylvania. As with other Extreme Makeovers, the story Ty tells and the home they build will hit home and warm the heart."
So, if you've got a TV and are in the mood for some uplifting content, check out Standard Solar on Extreme Home Makeover this Sunday.
Congratulations both the Standard Solar for the recognition of their skills, and to Extreme Home Makeover for helping a lucky family get off of the grid.
(Anyone in the NY area have a TV? Can I come over and watch? I'll bring potstickers.)
Love to All,

SuperForest Celebrity: The Guitar-tistry of Buddy Clontz!
How oh how did I find Buddy Clontz?
It's like a fever dream... The sweltering wastelands of endless youtube videos... searching for an instructional video... Who will clearly illustrate how to play "Please Please Me" on guitar?... So many dead ends... So much that is unhelpful... and then... Buddy Clontz.
Stumbling onto the many instructional videos that Buddy Clontz has uploaded is like wandering out of a dessert and finding a Pinkberry.
Let us begin...
Firstly, Mr. Clontz's masterly take on "Please Please Me":
After watching many people fumble through sketchy versions of "Please Please Me," Finding Mr Clontz's video was a revelation.
(Mr. Clontz, may I refer to you as Buddy? Buddy is just too friendly to resist.)
Next, Buddy puts his skilled fingers to the task of George Harrison's track "Beware of Darkness" off of 1970's All Things Must Pass.
Buddy can do more than just Beatles. Watch him tear up "Wind Cries Mary":
Buddy's quiver of excellent covers is practically overflowing.
He does Kinks, Byrds, Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin. He's amazing.
I think it's the mix of the deadpan expression, unforgettable name, high skill level, and sensitive attention to detail that really makes Buddy work for me.
Plus, he lists every guitar he's playing on at he beginning of each vid!
As you watch Buddy's videos, which I have for many hours now, you slowly get to know this interesting man. Because he seems to shoot only in his "music room" but in many directions, you eventually get a feel for the room, and the little details begin to stick out.
Buddy's Beatle memorabilia. His classic rock poster collection. His Marshall stack. His good luck strap.
Thank you for uploading these to youtube, Buddy.
Of all the videos, one stands out, because it is the only one with a light show, and one of the few when Buddy is standing.
Here's Buddy's take on Cream's "White Room":
Incredible.
Take us out, Buddy. Do that voodoo that you do so well.
For further guitar-tistry, here's Buddy's youtube page.
CES: Green Gadgets Part 2
I remember a childhood full of Costco-sized packs of batteries of all shapes and sizes. Batteries for cameras, toys, flashlights, remote controls. Batteries for emergencies. For the comfort that portable power brings. Batteries tossed casually into the trash. To spread their toxins and outlive us, like cockroaches or Wall-E.
But today we have lithium (still toxic) batteries, rechargeable batteries, LED flashlights that can be powered by hand-crank. The only conventional batteries I would still use would be for the remote control of the TV I don't have. But I think the answer to my question above is yes, most people still use disposable batteries. A necessary evil if you will. Well now there's a solution...
2) Green Batteries: For the first time ever at the 2009 CES convention, two companies unveiled the first ever Eco-friendly bats.
First up is Enviromax batteries from Fuji. As far as I'm aware these are the first ever, eco-friendly consumer batteries. What that means is they are made in eco-responsible factories in Japan, without the toxic materials like Mercury, Cadmium, or PVC found in most conventional batteries, and are packaged in recyclable materials. Add to that the fact that they last as long as regular batteries and are priced competitively... and you have a simple revolution in power! And they should soon be in stores everywhere and near you!
There's no reason to ever buy any other (toxic) brand of battery, ever again. Unless of course that brand is Aqua Power Systems No Po Po (non pollution power battery).
The No Po Po does everything Fuji's Enviromax does and then takes the innovation one step further. These batteries too are eco-friendly, safely disposed of in the trash when done, and are powered by WATER. Or soda. Coffee. Even Urine.
How does that work you ask? In truth, I don't really know, but after seeing, lord I do believe! Water is injected into a small tube in the batteries middle, or you can simply drop the battery in a cup and then dry it off. Plug it into a low-powered device like a clock, or small flashlight... and voila! Power. When it runs down, you can even recharge the battery with fresh fluid (though battery life and power decreases with each usage). It's pretty amazing technology, the catch of course being for now it can only power low wattage devices. But Aqua Power Systems out of China is right now using the same tech to build a 110 w battery that will be capable of powering an entire house for over 24 hours... on water.
The No Po Po is currently only available in Japan, but will be hitting our shores very soon. Exciting stuff!
SuperForest Heroes: Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III
So now we know the name of the quick thinking and steel tempered man who so gently set US Airways Flight 1549 down in the Hudson, saving the lives of all hands on board.
Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III!
Man, how he did it, I do not know.
Here is the video we shot yesterday:
(At around 1:28 you can see the tail of the plane.)
I left the video unedited so you can better get a feel for the scene on the streets.
Standing on the shore of the Hudson, watching all these little rescue craft tend to the struggling airliner like dolphins keeping a humpback afloat, and then turning around and seeing all of the people lined up at windows and on rooftoops, seeing just what I was seeing, the realization of the sheer scale of the event we were all sharing in was pretty heavy.
Captain Chesley, I hope you fly every plane I ever get on.
You don't need us to tell you, but you are a SuperForest Hero.

Build Yourself a Sparkleball!
Got a few leftover plastic cups, a string of Christmas lights and some patience?
Make a Sparkleball!

So sayeth the mysteriously unnamed creator of the Sparkleball site:
"I finally taught myself how to make Sparkleballs and now have made dozens. I've had Sparkleball-Making Parties. I made Sparkleballs for a bar in San Diego. Friends say I should start a business or charge for the instructions.
But every Christmas when I hang up my original Sparkleball and plug it in, I'm reminded of that dark Texas night and how it's those little detours we take in life that give us the most joy. And I reaffirm the fact that if I, an egghead serious negativizer, can get this much pleasure from something so simple, maybe I need to give it away. This website lets me do that.
Just call me the Missionary of Sparkleballs."
Oooh ooh! Me first!: "You are the Missionary of Sparkleballs!"
Wonderful! Saw it on notcot.

Coalition of the Thrilling - The Seedling Sprouts!
Good Afternoon SuperForest!
This monday, three days ago, we put out a call to our readers and fellow bloggers to join us in a little uh... exercise? No, exercise isn't this fun... Thought game? No, this has real world results...
Adventure!
That's it, adventure!
We asked our fellow bloggers to join the Save-A-Seed Coalition, a group with two simple goals, talk about the Millennium Seed Bank and the Save-A-Seed Coalition, and link to both.
The goal is to get as many people as possible to learn about and link to the Millennium Seed Bank and each other.
Anyone can join, all you must do is post and link.
We figure that it will appeal to people to think: If you can't save the forest, you can save one seed.
And that is all we're hoping to do: save one seed.
Let us spread our net-roots wide, save one seed, and then see if we can't save two.
But just one for now.
Right?
So, we put out the word on Monday and now the Save-A-Seed Coalition is beginning to take form:
SuperForester Cliff joined Save-A-Seed and mentioned the MSB on three of his blogs:

SuperForester Maaja joined and posted:

As did SuperForester Laurie:

And SuperForester Neal:

And SuperForester Sonja:

As did SuperForester Shawna:

Not even a week old and already the Save-A-Seed Coalition is twenty blogs strong, with more than thirty bloggers pitching in and more to come.
SuperForester Christine and myself will be working tomorrow night on a series of splashy logos for members to proudly display on their sites, should they choose.
Join the SASC!
All you've got to do is post about the Millennium Seed Bank:
http://www.superforest.org/2008/12/millenium-seed-bank-is-in-trouble-what.html
And the existence of the SASC:
http://www.superforest.org/2009/01/coalition-of-thrilling-save-seed.html
Thank you to all of those who have contributed their time and energy. We'll save that seed yet.
Love to All,

US Airways Flight 1549: Miracle Landing!
This just in:
All passengers and crew are reported to have escaped with their lives after what had to be the most amazing water landing to date.
Whoever was flying that plane is an absolute Superman. He or she is as yet unnamed, but rest assured that they will be receiving some hearty congratulations.
Repeat: Everybody made it out alive.
Great news.
Breaking News: US Airways Flight 1549 Floats Down the Hudson River

(From my flip not ten minutes ago.)
From cnn.com:
"US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 headed from New York's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, was down in the river after a failed takeoff, according to the Federal Aviation Administration."
I was sitting at my desk when the sound of a very loud plane made me get up and walk to the window. When sirens and helicopters followed, we grabbed our coats and went outside.
Video of the scene is uploading and will be available shortly.
Were are unsure right now as to the status of the passengers and crew, but from the wholeness of the plane, it looked to be a very controlled descent.
To watch a 737 float down the Hudson escorted by boats and helicopters is not something I'll soon forget.
Our hopes and prayers to the people on board, their families, and all parties involved or reading this.
SuperForest Slang: Consent Pranking
I was just thinking about Socialtaire and the way it adds an interesting spin to the concept of pranking. In my youth, pranking was what I lived for, but too often the pranking got out of hand and feelings were hurt, or eggs were needlessly tossed.
So the idea of a game based around a form of "Consent Pranking" in which the pranked party agrees to be pranked (i.e. Mountain Catted) in the hunt for lulz, is a very interesting new twist.
And because the name of the game is to get your opponent to laugh, the better the prank, the higher the chance for sincere peals of endless laughter following the reveal.
Interesting.
I hereby challenge any comer to a game of Socialtaire.
My headshot is ready, my wacom stylus is poised, and P'shop is running.
Who wants a taste?
I trust you completely.
Love,
Jackson
Ask SuperForest: SuperForester Frank Needs a Carbon Fiber Tank!
Good Morning SuperForest!
We just got in a question from SuperForester Frank, who writes:
"(Dear SuperForest,)
Where can I obtain carbon fibre bottles as on Jem Stansfield's bike? Please
see attached photo.
-Frank"
Dear Frank!
What a marvelous question!
We had nearly forgotten about good ol' Jem Stansfield and his miraculous air-bike. Thank you for jostling the memory.
Firstly, where can you get the tanks?
Here are some we've found:
New: Remote Medical
Used: A bunch on ebay
We think ebay should have you covered and provide a significant discount, however, it's not everyday that you purchase what is essentially a potential explosive, especially one that is lovingly cradled between your legs.
Maybe you wanna go with the full warranty on this item and scrimp on everything else. Think of the future.
And what of Mr. Stansfield? What of his wonderful vehicle?
As you can see, Jem is up to a great number of compressed-air-related shennanigans, (and how many folks can one say that about?)
Jem is using his powerful intellect for more than just vehicle design, he's also working on ways to feed and cook for large numbers of people using only the sun.
So, as you can see Jem's become a bit of a TV star. Good for him, because he's a massive celebrity to us here at SuperForest.
Here's is Jem's "Planet Mechanics" show site.
Good luck to you, Jem Stansfield, wherever you are and whatever you're up to.
And thank you to Frank, for his thought provoking question.
Got a question you need answerin'?
Ask SuperForest.

Socialtaire: "We do it for the lulz"
This image is none other than SuperForester Spoon. As you can see, Spoon has been Mountain Catted, (or MC'd.) This is because Spoon is playing Socialtaire.
This is how you play Socialtaire:
"We do it for the lulz"
Set up: Socialtaire is played via instant messaging conversation between two or more individuals.
Playing the game: In order to commence the game properly and officially, a three part process must occur:
1 .) The Challenge:
One player types, "I challenge you to a game of socialtaire!"
Player two responds with one of two possible answers... "Affirmative!" or, to player one's dismay "negative" (a "negative" response is not recommended, the object of the game is to make the other person cry but it is important to emphasize that the tears should flow as a result of laughter or pure bliss rather than as a result of rejection or hurt feelings.)
2.) The Pledge:
Both players look each other straight in the eye and establish a state of trust.
Player One: "I trust you completely"
Player Two: "I trust you completely"
3.) Initiation:
Formal initiation of socialtaire begins when both players simultaneously type:"Game ON!"
Now both players are ready to swap headshots of themselves for the other player to deface.
Both players get to work by quickly resizing/editing the pictures in a way that is both creative and funny. The challenge is in adding the "Mountain Cat-Element."
The more hilariously one can incorporate MC's into an image, the higher the chance of lulz. Lulz is laughter.
Once the Mountain Catting has been completed, players post the altered photographs on facebook, flickr, or email them to each other.
Upon receiving the exchanged photograph, the fun begins, the laughter erupts, and if lucky, tears well up.
The round ends when one player states "Your lulz are far too supreme for me."
Point Distribution:
After any given round, the lulz are tallied and each player awards his or her opponent a reasonable amount of lulz, feeling free to liberally apply hidden bonus multipliers and the like.
Here is the point conversion chart:
1,000,000 lulz = 1 frog.
10 frogs = The Universe is Yours.
Upon receiving 10 frogs, you will have reached nirvana, a place free from fear, doubt and pain. You will become a being of pure light, radiating love to every molecule in the universe.
It is a highly lulzy game.
Enjoy.
Here is the Socialtaire Flickr set.
If you'd like to join in the fun, send you images of your Mountain Catted friends to superforestnyc(at)gmail(dot)com.
Anti-Love Potion Number Nine?
John Tierney has a very interesting article up over at nytimes.com about love potions. Yes, very real love potions. For voles, that is.
Even more interesting are the anti-love potions being developed to help protect you (the voles) from the love potions.
Says Dr. Larry Young, a scientist developing this technology at Emory University:
Here's Dr. Larry's full article on vole amour.
“It would be completely unethical to give the drug to someone else,” he said, “but if you’re in a marriage and want to maintain that relationship, you might take a little booster shot yourself every now and then. Even now it’s not such a far-out possibility that you could use drugs in conjunction with marital therapy.”
Can we just call this one? Are we all wizards and witches now?
Love potions for prairie dogs? Segways? iPhones? The internet?
We're all like, love potion makin', telepathic, livin' forever with stem cells and organ printing, communo-love-wizards.
Tell me I'm wrong.
No, text me: you'43 wr0n9!
No, no, email me: you're wrong!
I'm not wrong. Humans are awesome.
Best of CES: Green Gadgets
The simple challenge I faced in my search for truly sustainable gadgetry was the "electronics" aspect. By nature, electronics are man-made constructs composed of largely not naturally occurring products. They require industry and energy to produce and a power source to run.
Still I'm proud to report that "going green" was a big thing at this years' CES with major companies like Sony, Samsung, LG, Lenova, etc... touting their greener TVs, computers, washing machines, and so forth. I found what this translates to in today's market is "energy efficient" products. They use less energy and often less toxic or more nature friendly materials and packaging. These are great steps forward towards the hopeful future of fully sustainable, eco-friendly consumer electronics.

Still, there were a pioneer few with their eyes on that prize, looking to bring that future of sustainable innovation about today. And finding these planet consious products was like finding diamonds in the rough. So here are my green gadget highlights for which we can all get overly excited about! The issue they all address is eco-energy consumption.
1) The nPower Peg:
On the last day, in the last 5 minutes of the convention I found what I think takes the prize for greenest gadget. The PEG, that little green pogo stick is really a Personal Energy Generator that harnesses the kinetic energy of human motion. Strap it to your hip, throw it in your backpack, go out for a walk or run, and the PEG converts your human power into electric energy that will charge your ipod, your cell phone, etc! What this means is never needing to plug your gear into an outlet again! It means endlessly sustainable power! Even motivation for a healthier lifestyle! We want it, we need it now.For the sustainable minded start-up company nPower, the PEG just a beginning. Next they plan to use the same technology to harness wave power. For their commitment to sustainable energy SuperForest gives nPower our Greenest Gadget award.

SuperForest Celebrities: Casey Brooks - Phantom Sea
Casey is a Brooklyn musician and longtime friend of SuperForest. He's got a project called Balene and is about to release his first album.
Take a gander at this:
A very nice promo, no?
What I really like about Casey is that he wrote and recorded the songs, shot and edited the promo, and is now on the verge of enacting his plans for releasing said album, which he is doing in a very modern way.
Instead of printing the usual couple hundred cd's, Casey is selling vinyl records, and each record coming with a code that allows you to download the album as mp3's. Smartilocks and the three bears.
He's a one man DefJam!
SuperForest recently scored an interview with Mr. Brooks. Let's hear what he has to say:
Nicey nice, Mr. Brooks!
Phantom Sea is set to drop in a month or so. We'll keep you posted.
Casey T. Brooks, you are a SuperForest Celebrity!
SuperForest goes to CES!

The words Las Vegas hold a powerful association for most people. The mere mention of the eponymous Nevada town tends to ignite images of the illicit in most of us. If New York is the city that never sleeps then Vegas is the town time forgot. Hopes run high 24-7 under the neon lights and dreams slide from the fingers of millions of migrants every day and every night, across every table-top in town.
Love it, or hate it... Sin City can be a polarizing place. But if there's one thing most people would be united on it's this... when you think of Las Vegas, sustainability is probably last thing that comes to mind.
Which is exactly what SuperForest went in search of -- throwing ourselves into our country's capital of consumption culture, into the heart of one of the world's largest conventions: The Consumer Electronics Show. CES for short.
Over the course of 72 intensive hours we scoured thousands upon thousands of exhibitor booths, miles upon miles of showroom floor, in search of the greenest gadgets, the coolest innovations for 2009.
We uncovered so much awesomeness, it's impossible to post all at once. Instead we'll be breaking it into categories stretched out over the course of this week. So if you're interested in best and future tech, green gadgets, and amazing innovations... stay tuned for SuperForest's top picks from CES.
The Importance of Brain Hydration
Thanks Brains for that excellent demonstration. I can only wish to someday have dance moves that slightly resemble yours. Maybe I'll start drinking more water.

20 blogs joined, 30 to go.
Join the fun!
If you're a true "modern environmentalist," then you thrive on fun, and this is heaps of it.
And the second thing is that none other than SuperForester Christine (!) is going to give our little Save-A-Seed logo the once over. This is truly exciting news. Christine is the most amazingly talented artist. Check out Christine's site.
Hmmmmm. Maybe we can convince Christine to mention Save-A-Seed on spookoo.com? And, if she'd post on spookoo, would she also post on her two other sites?
We could already be at 23 blogs?.....
Ha ha ha! Fun!
Much love,

Filippo Minelli
A while ago I visited the homepage of the Italian conceptual artist Filippo Minelli and I must that I'm very impressed. In an interesting manner he combines the digital word and the real world. Take a look at what he did to the wall separating Israel and Palestine.
I find it fascinating to see someone combine the fast, digital, computer world that we live in today with the somewhat less digital, 'realer' world.
Minelli did something comparable in Cambodia, there he heavily made use of the Web 2.0 concept.
It's part of his series named Contradictions, and I think the contradiction here is very clear.
In our Western world every toddler has got their own space on the internet but in places like Cambodia people sometimes don't even have their own space in the physical world.
Not all of Filippo Minelli's works are as issue-related as the above examples, nonetheless they're all worthwhile to look at. Visit his website for his portfolio and some more information on the man himself (the one-line-character series are worth taking a look at in particular).

Coalition of the Thrilling!: The Save-A-Seed Coalition (Part One)
Good Morning SuperForest!
As you can see from our little "fund-o-meter" down on the right, we have now raised more than $1,100 toward preserving a single plant species via the Millennium Seed Bank.
This is wonderful news!
So, thinks we, how to best raise the remaining amount?
Better than that, how to spread the Save-A-Seed meme across the blogosphere and internet in the hopes of raising further awareness and funds?
Our question is this: Can the blogosphere save the world, one cause at a time?
Here is how we're gonna try to find out:
We are hereby setting out on an Attention Generation Excercise! One whose sole goal is to tell people about the Millennium Seed Bank.
Right now, there are 37 people who follow SuperForest. Of those 37, 30 are bloggers. Those 30 bloggers have 49 blogs among them.
If you add in the members of Team SuperForest, you've got over 40 bloggers with approximately 50 blogs between them. So what can you do with 50 blogs?
We're hoping to unite them!
Today, the thirty bloggers who follow SF received the following email or comment on their sites:
"Dear (fellow blogger),
We would like to invite you to join us in a little adventure.
As you may well know, we've started an awareness and fund-raising campaign for the Millennium Seed Bank. In our opinion, the MSB is performing an invaluable service by preserving plant species, all for the incredibly low price of approx. $3000.00 per species. Compared to trying to save a piece of land, or an animal species, 3000 smackers is an absolute bargain.
We think their work will benefit all of humanity and is as far as we can tell, controversy free.
We happily invite you to join us in forming the Save-A-Seed Coalition.
The SASC will be an informal organization of volunteer bloggers with two goals: Tell people about the Millennium Seed Bank. And, tell more people about the Millennium Seed Bank.
We figure that the best way to raise awareness, (and hopefully funds,) for the MSB is by telling as many folks as possible, generating as much interest as we can...
Here is our plan for how we accomplish that:
We here at SuperForest will write a post about the idea of creating the Save-A-Seed Coalition and our plan to reach out to you.
If you decide to join in the fun, you write a post about being asked to join the SASC and whether or not you'll join.
If you join, we write a post about who has joined and we link to you. You write a post about joining up, and you link to us!
(See where this is going?)
Between the 37 folks who follow SF and us, we have over 50 blogs.
With 50 blogs writing about and linking to the Millennium Seed Bank, the Save-A-Seed project and one anothers blogs, we've all of a sudden created a very powerful informational and communication entity.
A sympathetic coalition of bloggers, flexing the blogosphere's infant muscles to help a needy organization sounds like just the sort of elevating content that people are hungry for, and we can all share in the fun!
Our immediate goal is to save one seed, (i.e. raise $3,000 for the MSB.) We are one third of the way there. Our plan is to raise this amount, send them a check, and immediately set to work on saving a second seed.
Micro-donations, collected across the vastness of the internet, could provide the lifeblood for the Millennium Seed Bank, and we hope that this little action will help that come to pass.
And as an added bonus, we all get to "meet" one another and get to know each other and each others work as we work for a worthy cause.
What say you? Will you join us?
With love and respect,
Jackson, Niki, Andrew, Alex, Taylor,
Jaell, Julius, April, Jordan, Iman, Carla, & Spoon
a.k.a Team SuperForest"
Joining the Save-A-Seed Coalition doesn't mean you have to donate money, or raise money, or ever deal with money... To join, you merely have to mention that the SASC exists and link to it.
I repeat: No need to donate, only post and link.
Enough folks mention, enough folks link, and the Millennium Seed Bank is as good as covered. That's what we're hoping.
As of now, four of the 30 has replied back in the positive. Thank you to SuperForester Sonja over at SilverJewelry, SuperForester Jenn over at Chucka Stone Designs, SuperForester Lindsay from lindsayisobsessed, and SuperForester Mimi from Everyday is a Saturday!
When enough bloggers get on board, then we can all write posts about the MSB at once, link to each other AND work up a press release about the whole thing thus far. Fun, right?
Let's work together and see if we can improve our environment.
Here's to exploration!
Love to All,
Team SuperForest

Play Me, I'm Yours
Photo: Dean SewellAs a lover of all instruments, I was pretty chuffed to learn about 20 pianos being placed all over Sydney, as part of the Sydney Festival. Each piano is decorated with coloured stencils that read: Play me, I’m yours, inviting passers-by to sit down and have an impromptu jam session.
Luke Jerram, the British artistic consultant behind Play Me, I'm Yours, sees the project as a way to bring people together.
“I've got a bit of a problem with art galleries because they only reach a certain segment of the community,” he said. “This provides an opportunity for people to be creative and to connect with a stranger.”
The outdoor pianos are chained to trees and signposts, and are covered with tarpaulins, but Jerram isn’t concerned about vandals or the weather. He bought the pianos cheaply on eBay and will donate them to the communities that play them during the festival.
SuperForester Chris Presents: A Beginner's Guide to Circuit Bending!
My name is Chris!
Granted, this isn't my first appearance in SFHQ (I'm already rolling in some cool acronyms! Just kidding.), but I figured an introduction would be nice. I, like many, stumbled on this website while sifting through a new favorite musician's blog, and I was hooked. I think within a week I had read close to every post. I was attracted to the immense style, positivity and kind vibes. SuperForest became a safe haven of the internet!
To be honest, I feel extremely out of my league with such an awesome crew to begin with. I am a rookie! Everyone starts somewhere, and needless to say SF is an extremely welcoming environment. One that I'm so excited to write, share, and explore with such cool people in.
And with that, I'd like to share a little story:
My friend, SuperForester Matthew, and I have recently gotten ourselves into circuit bending.
From Wikipedia:
"Circuit bending is the creative, short-circuiting of electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children's toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling the machine and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit."
And that's just what we did. We picked up an old child's keyboard from the Goodwill store (any DIYer's heaven) for six dollars. We took a walk to a local electronics wholesale shop and bought anything we could think of. The two women working there thought our complete lack of basic electronics knowledge was "cute." It probably was.
We walked back home, set up a small workshop in Matthew's room, complete with an open window and an air cleaner/fan (you don't want to breathe in solder smoke!), dismantled the keyboard, touched terminal to terminal with alligator clips until we found desir able sound-altering effects, soldered components like toggle switches, potentiometers, and even 1/4 inch stereo cables for electric instruments into these points. A guitar sounds awful through a toy circuit, believe me.
All in all, we had a super fun afternoon. We never realized how accessible a "hobby" could be. All it took was walking around town and a desire to have fun.
Here's a video we took. If you can get over the TERRIBLE quality and the home movie style, I bet you can see how much we were enjoying it. And how much you can too.
With love,
Chris
(Jackson here... Amazing post, Chris!
I got all excited about circuit bending and found these cool videos on youtube:
Furby sounds forlorn. Cheer up, Furby.
Also! Just found this gallery of mp3 examples of circuit bending via makezine.
First 3-D Fly-Through of a Supernova Remnant
The combined technologies of three of NASA’s observatories have provided us with this little beauty.

Her name is Cassiopeia A, and a turquoise dot in the middle of the orb is the only remnant of this now dead star. The outer shell represents the rest of the scattered remains. 3-D imaging technology has now provided astronomers and dreamers a fantastic trip through the supernova remnant. Take a look!
The universe is awesome…awe some!

NASA Pic of the Day: A Scientist on the Moon
"Scientist-astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt stands by the American flag during a moonwalk on the Apollo 17 mission. Home, that small dot in the blackness of space above the flag, is a quarter-million miles away.
Schmitt, Gene Cernan and Ron Evans made the Apollo program's final journey to the moon in December 1972, 36 years ago this week."
This image makes me proud to be an American, an Earthling, a human being, and a lover of science, technology, and exploration.
Fab work, NASA. And fab work Mr. Harrison H. Schmitt.
Fun Fact: Harrison Schmitt and fellow crew mate Gene Cernan were the last two human beings to walk on the moon.

Cast off your watches!
I've had a revelation and thus had the overwhelming urge to share it with you. I recently returned to work after a two-week break over the festive season. Although I didn't travel to a exciting/exotic/breathtaking holiday destination, I had the time of my life (which tends to happen during holidays) and I think I've just gathered why. I very rarely (if at all on some days) checked to see the time. I just lived from morning to night, going about my business and catching up with friends and family, without caring to know the time. Now, this reminded me of a passage I once read that talks about timelessness being one of the features of happiness. It certainly struck a chord, hence I've italicised the bits that bowled me over.
"Before time was promoted to a primary guiding force, people's lives had a distinct orientation in the present. With little more than the sun as a rough guide to phases of day and season, this timeless fabric enabled spontaneous engagement with the moment. It enhanced sensation and fostered a crisp awareness of the immediate surroundings. Very importantly, it allowed people to fully experience a wide range of emotions, including happiness.
Research shows that people living in future-oriented cultures have higher average stress and anxiety levels than cultures that are more present-orientated. This is because living in the moment offers greater predictability and control, as well as more certainty about one's own experiences. On the other hand, the future is always a gamble. Its unpredictability locks future-orientated people into a state of tension as they blow in the winds of uncertainty and far-flung hopes." In Search of Happiness, by John F. Schumaker
As a side note, I tend to believe that being silly also pertains to being happy.
How to Say I Love You - Part Deux

Forever Young: Bob Dylan

And one of my personal favorites…

This past October, a children’s book by the incredible Bob Dylan was released featuring the illustrations of Mr. Rogers. It is a book based off of Dylan’s 1974 classic “Forever Young” and the combination of the heart felt lyrics and the amazing illustrations make for a jaw dropping book.
In his blog, Paul Rogers describes the challenge in illustrating a book that takes on one of Dylan’s most loved songs. He explains that he attempted to bring elements from Dylan’s personal life background and his other songs in order to create a book that children, adults, and Bob Dylan fans in general, would enjoy.

I’d say he was very successful in doing just that.
Thanks Paul for such wonderful images and a big thank you to Mr. Dylan for such wonderful words. Words that will never cease to uplift and inspire me.
May you stay forever young,
Carla

DIY: How to say I love you
I found this lovely video on YouTube today and thought I'd share it with you all. "Nicola is sitting on a bench reading a book* when she is approached by Sam, an intrusive boy who strikes up an unusual and intimate conversation with her. The film identifies Nicola and Sams mutual feelings of lonliness and isolation, which partly stems from being part of a generation that would rather communicate through the internet than in person." Pretty pictures
I've long been mesmerised by the beauty of photographs taken with LOMO cameras. They tend to have a subtle haziness and mystery, which makes them a little more interesting than regular shots.
Here are a few golden rules of lomography:
1. Take your LOMO with you wherever you go
2. Use it all the time – day and night
3. Lomography does not interfere with your life – it's a part of it
4. Get as close as possible to the objects of your lomographic desire
5. Don't think
6. Be fast
7. You don't have to know what's going to be captured on your film
8. Shoot from the hip
9. Screw the rules
Check out these few gems, thanks to We Heart It.

The Hudson Valley Seed Library is Online and Open for Business!
Just got word in from the ever-hip SuperForester Severine about the Hudson Valley Seed Library, an organization dedicated to preserving and selling local New York seeds.
So sayeth the H.V.S.L.:
"Heirloom Seeds With Local Roots
After four years of germinating the Seed Library concept, we are ready to blossom--from selling seeds that are grown in distant soils to cultivating a regional seed production network in New York State. In 2009, we will be offering over twenty varieties of locally grown seed, and most of our varieties will be rooted in the history and soils of New York.
Every year we plan on growing additional varieties on the Seed Library farm and contracting with organic and certified naturally grown farmers in the Hudson Valley. Within five years, we hope to be 100% New York grown.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to revive the local seed trade. With your help, we can save heirloom seeds and their stories."
Thinking about planting a Spring garden? Start with some good ol' Hudson Valley seeds!
Huge thanks to Severine for the head's up.
Street Art: Roadsworth!
And this is some of his artwork:That’s right SuperForest; we’ve got another street artist for you! This one is coming to us straight from Montreal and his thought provoking artwork over in Canada has caused quite a stir. He began his work with one simple goal in mind, create more bike lanes. This goal would later evolve into somewhat of a movement. Gibson explains,
“As my personal artistic process evolved, political concerns were eclipsed by artistic ones and I often felt more inspired by the process than I did by the message I was trying to convey. Marshall Mcluhans famous quote "the medium is the message" is significant in this regard. The ubiquitousness of the asphalt road and the utilitarian sterility of the "language" of road markings provided fertile ground for a form of subversion that I found irresistible. I was provoked by a desire to jolt the driver from his impassive and linear gaze and give the more slow-moving pedestrian pause for reflection. The humourlessness of the language of the road not to mention what I consider an absurd reverence for the road and "car culture" in general made for an easy form of satire. In the spirit of Marcel Duchamps, all I had to do was paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa so to speak, to introduce a glitch in the matrix. A matrix made up in part by a worldwide network of roads and an ever-growing fleet of humans encased in steel carapaces, hurrying about like molecules in the body of an insatiable machine.”
Exciting! Some smart cats decided that his artwork was so astonishing, it had to be shared with a wider audience and as a result, they made a documentary about him. This documentary has been floating around several film festivals. Here’s a little demo.
What a mind blowing artist! Now of course much of what Peter Gibson was doing was quite illegal (he received quite a bit of heat from the law) but a lot of his artwork brings to mind simple yet important questions; questions on freedom of expression and to what extent that freedom holds true in public space. Gibson writes,
Although we thankfully don’t live in a totalitarian society (some would argue this point) there is nevertheless an underlying assumption that to have a voice in the public realm requires money, property or political influence. Some would say that relinquishing barriers to public expression is to invite anarchy but I would argue that a certain form of anarchy already exists: corporate anarchy. Not that I think that marketing or advertising is wrong. The exchange of goods and services is obviously an essential facet of the human experience but not the only one and I feel the common space should reflect a greater diversity of expression.
Interesting, do you have any thoughts on this or on street art in general? We’d love to hear them!
Have a great weekend!

Best. Gift. Ever. = Titanium Halligan Bar
Good Morning SuperForest!
We've posted about Halligan bars and their utter gift supremacy before, but nothing could prepare my bloggy self for the sheer joyous thrill that rang through my spine when first I hefted my very own new Halligan bar!
My dear brother, SuperForester Will, saw fit in his infinite generosity and wisdom to provide me with the best zombie-fightin', door-smashing, get me the heck into/outta here tool in the world.
In high tensile strength titanium, no less.
Less than half the weight of steel!
Will NEVER rust!
Electrical conductivity = 1/6th of steel!
Heat conductivity = 1/8th of steel!
5.25 pounds of pure, unadulterated awesomeness! The kind of awesomeness one can hand down to countless heirs. That's "heirloom quality" awesomeness!
And the bestest part? It has eyelets for a strap!!!
Swoon!
This year, give someone you love the gift that will never wear out, and can be used to escape from countless zombies: a titanium Halligan bar.
I swear, it just purred at me.
Will ordered mine from the fine people at Tico Titanium Inc. in good ol' Michigan.
A special thanks to my brother, who is the best brother in the history of siblings.

First Jet Flight Powered by Algae
Continental Airlines just completed its first test flight with a Boeing 737 that was partially powered by biofuel made from algae! The flight was the first test done so by a US commercial carrier.

Props to Continental!
One of the planes' two engines consisted of a 50-50 mix of biofuel and aircraft fuel.
"The flight from Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport completed a circuit over the Gulf of Mexico, and pilots carried out a series of tests at 38,000ft (11.6km), including a mid-flight engine shutdown.
'The airplane performed perfectly,' test pilot Rich Jankowski told the Houston Chronicle newspaper.
'There were no problems. It was textbook.'"
Textbook baby!
The best part about the test is that the biofuel used is a "drop-in fuel", meaning that there is no modification required for the aircraft to use it. The use of algae is fast becoming the future for biofuel: it grows extremely fast, does not compete with food crops, and is better for the enviroment.
All that is left is to make algae commercially competitive.
Check out the full BBC article here.

Cyclecide - Bike Rodeo
Anyway, I'm not here to talk about my fascination for Makezine. So on the premiere episode was this a-ma-zing feature about Cyclecide, a San Fransisco based group of people that do the impossible with bikes. They have a couple of hard-core, highly creative bicycle engineers that create awesome stuff. What? I'll show you.
At first sight this seems just a regular carousel. It is, in fact, but the Cyclofuge Swing (as it's official name goes) is not powered by electricity or steam. No, it's powered by none other then us humans. If you look carefully there are four people at the center pedaling like a bunch of crazymen just to keep the four other people in the swing seats going. The best of all is that the Cyclofuge Swing has been create out of old bicycle parts that have been recovered from dump yard. Isn't that like the furthest end of awesomity you know?
The Cyclecides do way more with bikes. They make tall bikes, mini bikes, flame-throwing bikes, inverted steering bikes, swinging bikes and even instrumental bikes.
So, if you think you're ready for a dose of pure awesomeness, a fair share of humor and a perfect piece of engineering you should absolutely check out the Cyclecide feature from Make Television; here it is. (Or check out the official Cyclecide website of course).

Architects of a New Dawn

"…there is definitely enough love and resources to go around. I have wondered over the years when this could be realized and who would be the ones to do it. Today, I am convinced more than ever that this is the time and that we are the ones we have been waiting for – generations of conscious beings from all walks of life with the courage, communications, and know how to change the world for the better.
We are the Architects of A New Dawn and this is what we came here to do."
Check out this oh so inspiring video!

Neil Young on Huffpo: Perfect Storm for Innovation Gathers in Washington
Neil Young knows a thing or two about cars. In today's Huffpo, he's got this to say about electricity, X-prizes, and coming opportunities for growth in the automotive industry...
"A perfect storm for innovation is gathering in Washington. With the government's recent financial assistance to GM and Chrysler, the Big 3 now have until the end of March to make the case that shows how they will survive. Survival is not enough though.
America now has a chance to lead the world in power and fuel efficiency. The Big three will still be looking for help at the end of March. As the major shareholder, the US government would have an opportunity to DEMAND the type of cars that will lead the world toward saving the planet for future generations.
If the Big three cannot agree to make only cars that are fuel efficient enough to get at least 50 MPG by 2011, 75 MPG by 2013 and 100 MPG by 2015, then they should go into bankruptcy and fend for themselves like all the other businesses that are having trouble. The truth is this can be done and innovators know the way to do it.
Better Place is a new model for power distribution to replace the old model of gas stations that supported the evolution of the automobile to this point. Better Place is taking hold in countries around the world and in some areas of the US. Better Place's revolutionary concept for distribution of power to vehicles actually lowers the price of the vehicle by making the battery free to the consumer and automaker, while a subscription allows the user to only pay for miles traveled. There is a great opportunity for innovative solutions with Better Place.
The Automotive X Prize is a race of 100MPG vehicles across America in 2010 sponsored by the Progressive Insurance Company. There are many entries. These cars must be safe and have a business plan that allows for at least 10,000 units per year. Automotive X prize contenders need to share their knowledge with the Car Czar. How will they get their cars to the magic 100mpg? There are some good ways to do it. Now is the time to share.
Innovators should swarm like locusts on Washington in January, February and March to show the Car Czar how to make fuel-efficient cars.A Car Czar who knows how it can be done, and a government in control of the automakers while they stabilize will be key to demanding all autos made in the USA have a minimum mileage rating of 50MPG. This includes cars, SUVs and pick-up trucks. Now it is time for America to take back the reins of innovation and show the true wave of the future. It is a window for a sea change and a new opportunity for America to lead the world.
Lincvolt, an X Prize contestant, is a 2.5 ton, 19.5 foot American classic now attaining 65 MPG utilizing electricity and domestic fuel. The converted 1959 Lincoln Continental MK IV demonstrates that today's big sedans SUVs and pick-up trucks can get at least 50 MPG if they are fuel-efficient and use electric power, making it obvious that smaller cars could do even better than that. Ultimately, the Lincvolt team aims to demonstrate a Lincvolt hydro bio-electric series hybrid that will attain 100MPG with domestic fuels and very low emissions.
In February, Lincvolt will begin an historic drive to Washington to showcase "the people's fuel," and show the President, the Car Czar, Congress and the Senate how innovation happening right now in America can be a beacon of change to the world.
The Lincvolt team invites the other contestants in the Automotive X Prize Race, Better Place, and innovators from around the world to join us in Washington during the first 100 days of the new administration."
Nice!
So, to distill:
50 MPG by 2011, 75 MPG by 2013, and 100 MPG by 2015. X-prizes good. Electric cars also good. A Better Place = amazing. Neil's got an electric Lincoln and is going to drive it to Washington.
Fun! Maybe we can be there when he gets there. That would be fun to see.
Here's the Lincvolt website.
And the Better Place site.

Translucent Concrete is So Hot Right Now!

We can now make concrete that light can pass through, and is 30 percent lighter than traditional concrete.
Just think of the many incredible uses for translucent concrete!
Translucent buildings. Translucent roadways. Clear bridges.
Fun.
I need a seven letter word for AWESOME!

This piece of work is around 30 meters (100 feet) tall and is located on the side of one of their residential buildings. But that's not all! The questions corresponding to this crossword are located all over the city (fountains, park benches, etc.). And then, when one has finished adventuring around the city and writing down their answers...

they can check those answers and watch them light up in the evening! Fun!

How to be a Gentleman (or Lady)
Boy was I wrong.

The books in question are a series of small readings that give lessons on how to be more like a gentleman in your daily living. At first I thought, "Why would I need this? I don't go to fancy balls or dress in tuxedos." But soon I realized what these books were really trying to teach.
The back of the covers read,
"A gentleman is someone who makes others feel comfortable. Good manners is simply a matter of common sense and courtesy."Sounds a bit like our Humanifesto, don't it?
and,
"Being a gentleman means being there when you are needed and knowing when you are not needed. It means knowing what to say and knowing when to say nothing at all. Being a gentleman is about making the world a nicer place for other people."
The titles of the books vary depending on what exactly your looking for, but include "How to be a Gentleman," "As a Gentleman Would Say," and "50 Things Every Young Gentleman Should Know."
I am currently reading the second from that list. As a Gentleman Would Say offers advice on how to respond or conduct oneself when speaking to another. Some of it's advice is common sense, such as:
"A gentleman never asks a woman if she is pregnant" and, "a gentleman never talks with his mouth full"
While some of the advice actually make you think, like:
"A gentleman takes no part in petty arguments over important topics. Instead, he takes action to bring about change."
And ladies, do not think that the gentlemen have forgotten you! They have the same exact line of books, but with "Lady" replacing "Gentleman" on the cover.
I love how the authors write these. They clearly explain that being a Gentleman (or Lady) does not mean being rich, snobby, well-to-do, etc. Rather, it means conducting oneself to bring about a positive change in everyone you meet.
If your interested, click around Amazon for the right Gentleman or Lady book for you.
Happy (Belated?) 2009!

The Neave Planetarium
The universe is an awesome place. But that's not what this post is about since it's titled The Neave Planetarium. Well, it's about the universe for a little bit then.

A planetarium is a place where the skies are projected onto a roof (or other surface). In other words, a planetarium is a place where you can take a gander at the skies without having to stand outside in the middle of the night (and maybe getting a cold). Of course a planetarium can never exceed 'the real thing', still they're very useful for showing future (or past) positions of celestial bodies (since you can't show your calculations in the real sky).
Having said that, imagine what would happen if everyone got instant access to a planetarium from any location. If that would be possible you could check what interesting objects are visible in your sky tonight.
Here comes the good news, the access has already been made possible. With The Neave Planetarium. Paul Neave is someone who has got a tremendous passion for web development. Check out his website, it's packed full of funny and interesting widgets. Including a planetarium.
Now you might say that Google shipped an alike feature in the latest revision of Google Earth but the beauty of Neave's version is that it's quiet minimalistic and very easy to use. With one click you're changing your view and with a few other clicks you're looking at sky alignments that lay in the far future.
As a bonus Neave also included information about the different objects we can observe (name, distance and constellation for example).

Can We All Become Human Calculators? Arthur Benjamin and the Calculator Kids
Hello All,
Okay, first watch this.
After seeing the way these children can quickly calculate massive sums solely by visualizing an abacus, one would think that with the necessary drive and enough practice anyone could learn this skill.
One wonders what other delightful mental tricks we'd be capable of, if we found the right way to visualize them.
If you liked the first video, you'll flip over this one:
Awesome, no?
Here's Arthur Benjamin's website.
His book - "Secrets of Mental Math"
Ooooooh ooo! "Secrets of Mental Math" for the Kindle.
And here is the abacus wiki.
SuperForest Gets Stumbleupon'ed!
Good Morning SuperForest!
Something wonderful has happened!
I needed a bit of time to fully process it, so my apologies for not writing about it sooner.
Last month an article on SuperForest about Michel Bayard, NYC's pinhole camera master, got picked up by makezine, which then got picked up by stumbleupon.
As a result, this article has now been viewed more than 130,000 times!
Zaaaaackaawaaaahhhhhh!
For this little blog to get a hundred thousand of anything is pretty darn good-feeling-making, but to have folks really express an interest in a great man and his incredible talents is just icing city. (As in an entire city made of icing.)
I hope this leads to further recognition of Michel Bayard and his prodigious gifts, and an increased appreciation for street art and street artists. Remember, there is treasure everywhere!
A massive "Thank you" to whomever the kind souls were who suggested us to makezine and to stumbleupon. Thank you very much. You've thrilled this humble blog!
"Brooce Lee" Ping Pong Pwnage!
Not the real Bruce Lee, but still a way fun ad. Go Nokia!
Unsure what pwnage means? Rock the 1337 dictionary for the fun fun times!
Zena Holloway: Water Babies!
Zena Holloway is a young photographer who blends underwater imagery with illustration and photomontage. The results are soothingly tranquil.

We Belong
You're there for just a second you beautiful devil (at 18 seconds in)... but I caught you in this lovely "Live United" United Way commercial.
Looks like SuperForest has made it national! One of us at least. And how appropriate that it is through standing up and taking your clothes off for a good cause.
Bravo good sir. Bravo. SupeForest hearts United Way.
Why So Slow SuperForest?
As you may have noticed, the frequency with which new posts are added has slowed a bit. Not to worry, there are fun and exciting behind-the-scenes plans being made and formulated, tallied, tabulated, scheduled and re-scheduled.
Things will pick back up starting Thursday.
Much love and Happy New Years to All,
-Jackson

Brave New Food! Homaro Cantu on Algae, Food Printing, and How We'll Feed the Masses!

"Make enough food for everyone. That's the end game.
And to get there, we have to start thinking a little crazier about what food is."
Homaru Cantu is a Chicago chef with some bold new ideas about the future of food.
This is a very pressing question with so many new humans born every year, and the Earth's resources being stretched thin as it is. How are we to ensure that everyone will be fed?
Mr. Cantu's idea: Challenge the very idea of what makes food food!
Wired.com has a great interview up now.
"Wired.com: What is food?Cantu: It's what enables us to live — and more than that, it's dense energy storage. If you look at it from that point of view, you start shooting two birds with one shot."
So if "food" is just another word for dense calorie storage, that pretty much means that anything that you ingest to provide your body with muscle energy is food.
By this definition, "food" can now be made in a great number of ways.
Like using a laser printer!
Sayeth Mr. Cantu:
"There's two ways to look at it. Let's say you have a food printer and eight cartridges, and grow eight crops on the roof, and that's all you need to replicate any food product you can imagine, from mom's apple pie to a cheeseburger with French fries. That would decentralize the food structure, and you'd know exactly where your food comes from."
Right now we use 3D printers to create everything from new cell phone designs to human organs. Why not just use basic food molecules in place of plastic or cells?
Print a pie! Print a burger! Print some fries to go with that!
This amazing object was printed by the superstars over at Evil Mad Scientists Labs using the Candyfab. Is is made by heating white sugar and extruding it in layers.
Obviously this is a major leap from the ways food is thought of and prepared today, but keep in mind that research into what Homaro Cantu is proposing will inevitably lead to refinement, mass production, and ultimately could solve how we go about feeding our billions of brother and sister humans.
And not only that, but "food printing" will come in mighty handy when we decide to start seriously exploring both outer space and the sea bed.
Homaro Cantu is an amazing mind. When asked what he's been up to recently, he replied:
"Homaro Cantu: We've been trying to incorporate food from the green world, and started growing microalgae. You can get 10,000 to 30,000 gallons of algae per acre. It can be grown in salt or fresh water, in a whole variety of temperatures. It increases the food supply rather than depleting it, and it's a net energy gain. Here's an algae-makin' bioreactor in action:
For $300 we built a photobioreactor that produced 15 gallons of food per month. The idea was to take algae, process it into sushi and fuel, and deliver it it in a truck running on algae biofuel. And we're just a bunch of chefs. If we can figure this out, I don't know why others can't."
In his free time Homaro Cantu works up bioreactors for sushi and fuel. This cat is an absolute hero!
